The Edge-Bursa Rat Race 2008

Today, the firm sent a team of runners to take part in the Edge-Bursa Rat Race 2008. Similar to last year's race, this was going to be a run right through the streets of Kuala Lumpur at around 5pm.

The flagoff would be at Bursa Malaysia at the usual carnival atmosphere was there.

And of course, there were various teams with interesting costumes on display.

I didn't manage to take any more photos as I had to store away my camera and we didn't have any supporters this year to help us take pictures. For the second year in a row, when I see all the interesting and outlandish outfits the other teams were wearing, I again harbour hopes of the firm's team to also think up of interesting workwear-like outfits to wear. We were again dressed in a simple white shirt, black pants, but now with our red caps.

I was all geared up for today's race, hoping to do a better time than last year. The team of 5 runners generally were all fitter than last year, having put in some individual training shortly before the race.

The CEO race kicked off first, over the shorter 1 km course, and the firm's representative crossed the line in 10th position, which was great.

Then it was time for the Open category to be flagged off. This meant mainly the all-male teams were running. We took part in the Mixed category, where each team required a minimum of 2 female runners. We were soon flagged off as well, and then I took the time to take in the familiar sights of the Rat Race route. It was going to be a quick 4.5km tour round parts of the city.

It was hotter this year, unlike the slight drizzle we had last year, and the heat coupled with the car exhaust fumes started to take its toll. Throat kept drying up very badly, but kept on running. The cars were again deadlocked in a snarling traffic jam, but all of them were strangely silent this year. The usual supporters spread out over the route also seemed to be less.

It always perked me up a bit to run through a crowd of cheering supporters (not cheering for me of course) or to sprint through the bewildered looks of passer-bys.

I was the second runner from the team to cross the line, coming in 44th overall in the Mixed category. It definitely felt more torturous this year round. Maybe it had to with the faster pace, and also the heat. I was so tempted to grab the bottles of water provided at the halfway mark but knew it would either cause me to feel bloated or get a stitch. My time, just over 24 minutes I think. The rest of the team did well as well, clocking in faster times than last year.

Chugging down the cans of 100 Plus provided at the finishing line never felt so good before. Overall still enjoyed the run. The shorter distance of the 4.5km meant you had to race at a quick pace most of the way. The longer distances of 9 or 10km meant I could kinda run at a more comfortable pace and use certain sections as a recovery phase.

Next run should be sometime in November, and fingers crossed another run in December.
