My car got broken into this week. It was quite depressing.
My car was parked outside and I had locked my belongings into the boot. When I returned, I noticed that my boot was ajar a bit. I thought to myself that I was very sure my boot was locked and at first, thought whether I was stupid to not close my boot properly and someone could have taken my stuff.
I opened my boot and my bag was still there. I started to rummage for my phone and it was gone. My relatively new Blackberry, gone. I started to panic a bit and checked the other compartments of my bag and it wasn't there. I check for my wallet and it was there, and I quickly flipped it open. My cards are still there but all the cash had been taken away. Realisation started to sink in and I started to accept that my boot had been forced open. My watch had also been taken away and I could see the damage done to the lock on my boot, where it looked like some sort of sharp object had forced it open.
I got into my car and drove furiously back to my office, the first thought on my mind was that I needed to get to a phone to quickly call up my service provider suspend my phone. The over-powering feeling of anger washed over me. I was first of all so angry at myself for having not parked somewhere else, or maybe trying to secure the car more, or to have done something different. The car had already been parked in a very open area and I am very sure that whoever had broken into my boot, had been seen by other people passing by but they must have thought it was just his car. I was then so angry at the thief. He stole not only my relatively new phone but also my watch which was a graduation gift. I am only thankful that he did not take my whole wallet, with all my credit cards and IC. That would have been a nightmare to replace and cancel all those cards.
Everytime I walk back to my car now, I half-expect the car to be broken into or for the car to not even be there. I just wouldn't be surprised anymore. Not in this country.
