Another Route to Practice Singapore Law

Singapore continues with its legal market liberalisation by making it even easier for foreign lawyers to practice Singapore law. Aside from passing the necessary exams to get Called to the Singapore Bar, foreign lawyers can now apply for a Foreign Practitioner Certificate. This news was covered by ALB although the headline is slightly misleading as this route does not allow a lawyer to be admitted to the Singapore Bar, but just to practice in certain permitted areas of Singapore law. These areas would be in corporate law as well as international arbitration. The traditional ring-fenced areas such as Court litigation, conveyancing, or criminal law are still off-limits.

Some brief information is found at the Ministry of Law website.

Hi, i'm a Singapore citizen. I am currently a student of University of London's external international program. Likewise, my aim is to practice law in singapore. With a UK LLB degree, could you shed some light on how i can achieve my aim...When i checked with ministry of law, they direct me to their website which does not clearly state about external LLB admissions. hOpe you can advise of turn me into the right direction. Hi. You will need to first apply for the Part A Bar exam course but you will need to put in an exemption application with the Ministry of Law. More info is found here: http://app2.mlaw.gov.sg/UsefulInfo/PracticeoflawinSingapore/Exemptions/tabid/268/Default.aspx

You essentially need an exemption from the "Qualified Person" requirement as the London external degree is not one of the recognised degrees. Best of luck with your exemption application.

Am I correct to say that the chances of success is not high at all?

I am currently in the same situation.
